Pennsylvania

In 1681, King Charles II of England granted William Penn a section of land west of the Delaware River. Penn called this forested land Sylvania (Latin for “woods”). As a tribute to William Penn’s father, King Charles himself tacked on the prefix, making it Pennsylvania. One of the original Thirteen Colonies, Pennsylvania is known as the Keystone State because of its important role in forming the country. The Declaration of Independence was signed and the United States Constitution adopted in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania has contributed much to how Americans eat. Hershey and Heinz are headquartered in Pennsylvania and familiar throughout the country and much of the world. Pennsylvania is a major manufacturer of potato chips, pretzels, and other snacks. In Philadelphia, Italian immigrants created the Philly cheese steak and pepper pot, while Pennsylvania Dutch developed warm comfort foods like chicken pot pie and regional wonders like sticky buns, scrapple, shoofly pie, and the soft pretzel. The first commercial mushrooms were grown near Philadelphia in the late 19th century. Pennsylvania remains a major mushroom producer.

Toad In a Hole

Reviewed on Oct. 11, 2008 by happyschmoopies
I grew up eating this as "eggs in a nest". My husband had "gasp" NEVER had it! I did flip it after a cooking a few minutes on one side like others did before adding the cheese. My husband likes his eggs over medium and this way you can get the egg white cooked, but, still leave the yolk "runny". Definitely a keeper. This is also a great recipe to make if you have a crowd. You can just pull out your griddle and line them up!

Made this for my daughter's 17th birthday. The whole family loved it. She wants me to make it again for Tahnksgiving instead of pumpkin pie...it wasthat good. Topped it w/a little whipped cream and an extra sprinkle of nutmeg. Yum!

Supreme Apple Butter

Reviewed on Oct. 11, 2008 by imallie
This recipe is SO amazing. I had to use a little less cloves, and I used regular brandy, because it was all I had. I made one batch and I really wish I had doubled or tripled it. My husband and I canned them in 15 half pint jars, using the hot water method. Making this was relatively easy, the only part that took a lot of time was actually peeling the apples. I am going to make this again and again, and my family and friends will definitely be receiving some for Christmas. Thanks for an awesome recipe!
